Creating a Home Filing System

What you’ll need:

  • Hanging file folders
  • Manilla folders
  • Filing cabinet
  • Fireproof waterproof safe (or safety deposit box)
  • Jump drive for e-files (or safe them directly on your computer)

First, think about what categories you’ll need and use. Below are my categories (I used hanging file folders for the main categories, and manilla folders for the subcategories). Also, I have the below home filing system replicated exactly on my computer, using main folders and sub folders as follows as well.

Filing System (hard copy and computer copy) Categories:

  • Addresses
    • Business
    • Christmas Card List
    • Personal
  • Autos
    • Insurance

  • Personal
    • Birth Certificates (Originals in Safety Box)
    • Education Records & Expenses
    • Marriage License (Original in Safety Box)
    • Passwords
    • Safety Box Inventory

So, I have a hard copy home filing system in my desk’s filing drawer, as well as an electronic copy on my computer. I also have a safety box with the following categories and subcategories.

Safety Box Categories:

  • Autos
    • Titles to Vehicles
  • Bank Records
    • Account information
  • Health & Medical Records
  • Home
    • Household Inventory
  • Income Tax (Prior Years)
    • Prior returns and supporting documents
  • Insurance
    • Policies and contact information
  • Personal
    • Birth Certificates
    • Marriage Certificate
    • Social Security Cards
  • Jump Drives & External Hard Drives

And there you have it. A home filing system contained in my filing drawer and safety box as well as saved on my computer, and my homemaking binder (which I keep separate from my home filing system). That’s the entirety of my home management paperwork =)
